Rats on Rafts are from Rotterdam and their style has been compared to a mix of Post Punk and New Wave with elements of C86
and pre baggy by an excitable press. Comparisons to the Fire Engines, The Cure, The Chameleons and The Specials and have also been bandied about.
The band swear spiritual allegiance to the Rotterdam's New Wave, Pop and Punk scenes with one proviso, the weirder the better.
Rats have been together for a few years and, after boring themselves into finally getting good, they embarked on a phase which
is slowly seeing them recognized as something a bit special by their own countrymen.
In 2008 Rats released their first EP, "So Long And Thanks For All The Fish". The record received good (if somewhat bemused) reviews
and saw them play on 3voor 12's "Hollandse Nieuwe" nights and the "Local Heroes" event, hosted by Dutch magazine Live XS.
Their other record, a single, "The Moneyman" (a cover of a song by Rotterdam heroes KIEM) was released in September 2010.
The record was brought out on their own label and was produced by KIEM frontman, Huub Kentie.
The b-side to this single, "Plastic Plaster" was played by Cerys Matthews on her BBC 6Music show
Rats were invited by the Dutch broadcasting giants VPRO to compose a track for the Tiger Award winning film,
"Bleak Night", shown at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam. A Dutch language interview with an
enthusiastic presenter can be seen HERE. Rats have recently played Tilburg's prestigious Incubate Festival
a performance that got rave reviews and generated a flurry of activity on Twitter. They take part in the national
musical jam wagon that is Popronde in November 2011
Rats were personally asked by the Late Great Jay Reatard to open for him, and the band have also opened for US acts
Boston Chinks and Digital Leather. At the end of February 2011 Rats went to the UK to play a mix of odd and charming venues
on the South coast, and Newcastle upon Tyne where they were raucously & violently received. In January 2012 Rats will support
Dutch New Wave heroes (and Factory Records band) Minny Pops on their "Standstill to Motion" UK tour. Minnypops.com
Rats will also be involved in another Minny Pops project in March 2012, the ULTRA 2012 mini tour,
which will see diverse and exciting events in four Dutch cities.
Rats on Rafts have struck a deal with Subroutine Records and their debut LP The Moon Is Big is released on 23 September 2011.
